Urban Empire: Developer Update #1

To keep you up to date on the development process of Urban Empire, we’ll be publishing regular features and updates for the game straight from Fragment Production in Finland.
The past few weeks have been mostly spent putting the last pieces of the puzzle together for the debut of at Urban Empire this year’s GDC in San Francisco, CA. The team has been concentrating on the four main ‘pillars’ of the game:

  1. District Management
  2. The City Council
  3. The Progress Cloud
  4. The Event System
District Management
As mayor, you will enlarge and shape your city through the establishment of districts. This month, the team has been busy updating the district layout generator, in order to create more realistic results in terms of the appearance of the various districts and how they fit together.

The City Council
Each of your actions in Urban Empire might result in a change in your standing with the different members and factions of the city council.
Currently the team at Fragment Production is working to bring the city council to life – working on the individuality and animations of the council members.

The Progress Cloud
The Progress Cloud shows a map of inventions and changes that will shape a particular era of history, with your decisions resulting in different paths to progression. Naturally, this means there are loads of images to be created, descriptions texts and voiceovers to be written, polished and recorded.

The Event System
There are several types of events that take place over the course of the game that will require action, including ‘District Events’, ‘City Events’ and ‘Political Events’. There will also be some events that directly affect the city council, or the player themselves.
The major events are already in the game, but there’s still a lot of work to do – getting all the details right, tweaking texts, testing and also ensuring that the reactions trigger the next event correctly, etc.

Well, that’s all we can share for now – but we’ll be back soon with more exclusive behind-the-scenes material. Your opinion matters too – what would you like to see in these updates? Let us know!
Thanks from everyone at Kalypso Media and Fragment Production!
